The territory is located roughly between the equator and the pole, at the latitude of Northern Italy and Southern France; the 45th parallel divides it into two approximately equal parts. The territory borders with the Rostov Region in the North-East, with the Stavropol Territory - in the East, with Abkhazia - in the South. The region comprises the Repub- administrative centre of the ter- lic of Adygeya. Over five million people reside in the territory; 53% of which – in cities, and 47% - in the ru- ral area. The average popula- tion density is 73.8 people per 1 square kilometre. The Krasnodar Region comprises 44 municipali- ties and urban districts, including 26 cities, 21 urban settlements and 1,717 rural settlements. The GMT offset (in comparison with UTC) is +3:00. |||| Krasnodar Region ocated on the border of middle and subtropical latitudes, at the junction of flatlands and moun- tains, the territory is notable for a variety and versatility of weather conditions. The climate on the largest part of the territory is moderately continental, though it's subtropical on the coast of the Black Sea (to the South from Tuapse). The average temperature on the flat land in January is minus 3-5 degrees, in July-plus 22-24 degrees. The coast of the Black Sea can be divided into two climate zones. From Anapa to Tuapse is an area of a moderately continental climate. From Tuapse to So- chi is an area of humid subtropical climate. The duration of the warm period (the period with the atmospheric temperature above 0 °C) on the most part of the territory is 9-10 months, while on the coast of the Black Sea the temperature actually nev- er drops below zero degrees, i.e. there are only a few days of the cold period when subzero figures can be observed. In total, there are 140-153 summer days. Summer is mostly moderately hot, the hottest months fall on July-August. The maximum temperature exceeds 35-39 °C, the number of days with the maximum temperature above 30 °C in summer is about 30-65 days. The frostless season in most of the regions lasts for 180-200 days, on the coast of the Black Sea - 220-260 days. Every popular urban resort of the Krasnodar Region has its individual climate patterns. Anapa is famous for the greatest solar activity (2,450 solar hours per year). Novorossiysk is notable for a rare atmospheric phenomenon - bora, the gusting wind with a speed of up to 40 m/s. Gelendzhik is a record-breaker when it comes to the amount of precipitation – in the av- erage, 800 mm of precipitation occurs in 365 days here. Still, the climate in the territory is one of the most favourable for living and working in Russia. The Kras- nodar Region is the warmest Russian region; the av- erage period of time when there's the sunny weather during daylight is 2,300 hours per year. 12 13#8Social Portrait, Religion K uban is a multinational re- gion where representatives of more than 120 ethnic groups reside. ― A prevailing nation is the Rus- sians who consider themselves a special sub-ethnos Kuban Cos- sacks who speak Russian with elements of the Ukrainian lan- guage. The Armenians (the area of Armavir) and the Greeks also live compactly in the Krasnodar Region. The length of railroads in the region is 2,200 km or 34.5% of all the length of the North Caucasus Railway. The Olympics in Sochi became one of the most largescale and big- gest Russian projects of the last 20 years. Over many years the Krasnodar Region has been one of TOP 10 most attractive Russian regions for investors. Chernozemic more then 4% of Russian and about 2% of chernozemic world reserves - soils with the area of 4,716,000 ha (which is more than 4% of Russian and about 2% of world reserves) prevail on flat lands of the territory. They are notable for darker shades, looseness, a good structure, nutritional den- sity, and an ability to produce heavy agricultural crops. It allowed the re- gion becoming one of the most popular and the largest resort, recreational and tourist centre in Russia. Investments into fixed assets of en- terprises of the resort, recreational and tourist complex over the last five years (2013-2017) have amounted to 135.2 bln rubles. C urrently 654 tourist-excur- sion organizations operate in the territory, including 110 tour operators (48 of which deal with the domestic and in- bound tourism). Largescale events held owing to preparations to the 22nd Winter Olympic Games and 11th Winter Paralympic Games en- sured the development of Sochi as a world-class mountain climate re- sort. A new positive image of the Krasnodar Region as one of the Russian ski centres was formed. In 2018 the mountain cluster of So- chi urban was visited by more than 1.8 mln people. Alexander's Triumphal Arch (Tsar's Gates) The Alexander's Triumphal Arch also known as the Tsar's Gates was erected in 1888 to commemorate the visit of Alexander III and his family to the city. Construction was funded by the merchant community of Yekaterinodar. An elegant arch was constructed in the Russian National Style. Initially, it was placed at the junction of Mira Street and Sedina Street. Since 1900 a tramline has been running under the arch. The Tsar's Gates had been a landmark of Yekaterinodar for thirty years until the arch was destroyed in 1928. In 2008 the Tsar's Gates restored by photos and drafts changed their historical place for the junction of Krasnaya Street and Babushkina Street. Dog Capital Sculpture In his sculpture, Valery Pchelin captured two dogs who met for their first date at the building with clocks, at the junction of Mira Street and Krasnaya Street. Saint George Cathedral On June 18, 1895, the Saint George Cathedral named after Great Martyr St. George the Victorious was erected in Yekaterinodar, on the place of the former metochion of the Balaclava St. George's Monastery of the Taurian Diocese. The total length of the cave is 690 m, and its depth is 37 m. Tender (Nezhnaya) Cave The Tender Cave is located at the bottom of the western plateau-like slope of the Azish-Tau Ridge. Krasnodar Region Large Fanagori Cave The cave is located within 12.5 km from the Fana- goriyskoye village, at the merge of the Burlachenko- va River and the Cave Gap. The Fanagori Cave was known as early as in the 18th century. In the late 19th-early 20th century it was visited by pilgrims. Rescue Rock ("Cockerel") One of the most famous natural monuments of the Caucasus. The rock used to be called a Rescue Rock. It's located on the western slope of the Abadzekh Mountain on the Psekups River, on the outskirts of Goryachy Klyuch. The height is about 28 m. The rock was created with 'efforts' of the Psekups River that had been cutting its southern side for million years while bending around the Abadzekh Mountain on its way. That's how an almost sheer cliff was born. Yeysky District Island of the Seven Winds It is located on the Yeyskaya Spit. Here you can walk into the depth of the island to have a look at flora and fauna, see the local lake and, of course, try sulfured therapeutic muds yourself. It's an incredibly beautiful and accessible for visits place in the Healing Park on the outskirts of Goryachy Klyuch. Chapel in Honor of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God The chapel is at the bottom of the Abadzekh (Kly- uchevaya) Mountain, not far from the right bank of the Psekups River. In the second half of the 19th century, it was attached to the stone grotto next to an Iveron healing spring. It has been available till the 1920s granting holy water to the locals and pil- grims. It's a perfect place for surfing. 84 85#44Krymsky District Shugo Mud Volcano The Shugo Mud Volcano is known to be the biggest mud volcano in Russia and the most impressive and unusual one in its district. It's no coincidence that it's included in all the guides of Taman, Kuban and the Northern Caucasus as a unique natural land- mark. Labinsky District Round Lake The Round Lake in the area of the Gornoye village of the Akhmetovskoye settlement is located 6 km to the South-East to the Akhmetovskaya stanitsa, on the Black Sea Range, at the height of 790 m, at the bottom of a deep karst funnel. The sizes of the lake are 240 x 123 m, and its depth is up to 18 m. It's fed with underground and headwaters. Water is transparent, and the bottom can be seen at the depth of up to 6 m. There are two very beautiful caves and arcs next to the lake, and on the op- posite slope from the Gorny settlement there is a spring with clear mild mineral water. Event Passport Mostovsky District Bolshoi Tkhach Mountain That's where the Peredovoy (Fore) Range starts. It's located on the border of the Mostovsky Dis- trict of the Krasnodar Region and the Republic of Adygeya. The height is 2,368 m. It's a typical cuesta with a mild grassy northern slope and rocky walls in the South and in the West. From the South the Bolshoi Tkhach Mountain resembles a medi- eval Gothic castle. Residents of the Dakhovskaya stanitsa (Sakhray settlement) call it the Bald Moun- tain. 'Tkhach' means 'god' in Adygei. Otradnensky District Valley of the Urup River According to a geologist, the valley of the Urup River is a honey pot with reserves of limestone, gypsum, shell gravel, sandstone; where oil, natural gas, rock salt, outflows of mineral and sulfurous wa- ters, as well as therapeutic muds have been found. Rotten Mountain Volcano (Hephaestus) It's a whole chain of mud volcanos on the Rotten Mountain on the outskirts of Temryuk. The height of some volcanos reaches 3 meters. Amazing flowers come into blossom at first light and during the day as by magic; they change their colour several times from purple to pale pink shades. Yasenskaya Spit - Yasenskaya Spit is a sand spit located on the eastern coast of the Sea of Azov, between the Yasensky Bay and the Beisug Liman. It starts to the North of Morozovsky Khutor and reaches out to the Yasenskaya Crossing. The Yasenskaya Spit is 14 km of unique sand beaches that are notable for their natural cleanness, shallow depths of the sea which is convenient for people with children, so they attract multiple fans of camping. Ataman Exhibition Complex The ethnic and cultural complex is spread out on the outskirts of the Taman stanitsa. The Kuban feast is long, gener- ous, abundant, full of songs and heart-to-heart talks. Tradition- al dishes of the Kuban cuisine are the Kuban borsch (red-beet soup), Black Sea fish, dumplings (vareniki) with various fillings, meat cooked in different variants, and snacks made of eggplants which are affectionately called 'sinenkiye' ('blue vegetables'). Unlike the Ukrainian borsch, the Kuban one is not cooked with beetroot (which is called 'vine- gret beetroot' in the region), but with candy-striped beetroot. boggles the imagination: quark, potatoes with mushrooms, and soft sorts of cheese. But the most popular dish in Kuban is dumplings with pulpy berries cherries or strawberries. The best way to serve dumplings is with honey or sugar syrup.
