FFFFFFF 6#7Geographical Location of Manipur A small state situated in the extreme corner of North East India having 352 kms international border with Myanmar on the south- east and 502 kms long border with the adjacent states of Assam on the west, Mizoram on the south and Nagaland on the north. The state is an isolated hill-girt stretching between 92°58'E to 94°45'E longitudes and 23°50'N to 25°42'N latitudes with a total geographical area of 22,327 Sq.kms. of the total area, about nine tenth of area or 20,089 Sq.kms hills which surrounds the 2,238 Sq.kms of the valley. It is a charming place encircled by nine hill ranges on all sides with a small and beautiful oval shaped valley like a bowl at the centre. This state is known as Manipur "Jewel of India" - Jawahar Lal Nehru "Switzerland of India" Lord Irwin FFFFFFA 7#8State's Physiography and Topography Physiographically the state may be divided into two distinct forms- an outlying area of rugged hills and narrow valleys, and the inner area of flat plain, with all associated land forms. The Loktak lake the largest fresh water lake in North east India is an important feature of the valley with a total area of about 600 Sq.kms. Topographically the state is divided into three major regions such as i) hills b) Imphal valley and c) Barak Basin. The Imphal valley which is around 48.3 km in length and 32.2 km in breadth lies in the centre of the state. The major river of Manipur is Barak River and the Imphal River. Imphal River is the longest river and it also collects excess water from the Loktak Lake and flows to join the streams of Ningthee and Chindwin river of Myanmar. FFFFFFF 8#9Demographics status of Manipur The population of Manipur as per 2011 Census was 28.6 lakhs consisting of 14.4 lakhs males and 14.2 lakhs females registering a population density of 128 per sq.km. The decadal growth rate in 2011 over 2001 was found to be 24.50 per cent. The density of population per Sq.km. in the hill is 61 as against 730 in the valley. Out of the total population, 3.41 per cent are scheduled castes communities and 40.88 per cent are of scheduled tribes. The sex ratio for the state as a whole has improved from 974 females per 1000 males in 2001 to 985 per 1000 males in 2011. In term of literacy, Manipur ranks 5th among the North Eastern states of India as per 2011 census. The present literacy rate as per 2011 census is 79.85 per cent. Vaiphei 32.Zou 33.Any Kuki. About 95 per cent of the scheduled tribe populations are found in the hill districts of Manipur while remaining 5 per cent are found in the valley districts. The Scheduled Caste recognized by the Govt of Manipur are inhabited at Awang Sekmai, Andro, Leimaram Khunou, Koutruk, Kwatha, Khurkhul, Phayeng and Tairenpokpi. Among them 98 per cent are concentrated at valley districts and remaining 2 per cent are settled in the hill districts. 10 FFFFFFF#11POPULATION BY RELIGION Attempts are also made to provide a clear picture of the religious pursuits of the people of Manipur. The Hindus who constitute about 41.39 per cent The Muslims who constitute about 8.39 per cent are mostly settled in the valley. Most of tribes are now Christians with a percentage of 41.29 are settled in the hills. Other religious like Jain, Buddhist are also found in Manipur. FFFFFFA 11#12Economic Resources of Manipur The Economy in the state of Manipur depends mainly on the agricultural sector for it is the biggest livelihood source for the rural people. The various kinds of crops grown in Manipur are rice, maize, pulses, and wheat. The cultivation in the hilly area of the state is done using the Jhumming and terraced cultivation methods. Whereas, in the valley both. traditional methods and scientific methods are commonly used. Various kinds of fruits and vegetables such as pine- apple, orange, mangoes, lemons, carrot, ladies finger, cabbage, and pea are also grown in Manipur. The agricultural sector contributes a great deal of revenue to the Economy in Manipur. During the Second World War, Manipur was the scene of battles between Japanese and Allied forces. The Japanese were beaten back before the Allies could enter Imphal. This proved to be one of the turning points of the War. After the was, the Manipur Consititution Act, 1947, established a democratic form of government with the Maharaj as the Executive Head and an elected legislature. In 1949, Maharaj Budhachandra was summoned to Shillong, capital of the Indian province of Meghalaya where he signed a Treaty of Accession merging the kingdom into India. thereafter the legislative assembly was dissolved and Manipur became part of Republic of India in October 1949. it was made a union territory in 1956 and full fledged state in 1972. The Battle took place from May 20-29, 1944. The Battle of Khongjom 1891 was the greatest battle of the Anglo- Manipur War. Great freedom fighters-Major Paona Brajabasi, Chinglen Sana, Khumbong Major, Loitongba Jamadar, Keisa Jamadar, Heirang Khongja and many more rank and files of Manipuri warriors sacrificed their lives at this battlefield.
