ā— ā— . Introduction: What is Schistosomiasis? Schistosomiasis is a water-borne disease, caused by worms that live in infected water (such as lakes and rivers). People become infected when they come into contact with this water when the parasitic worm is present. It is an acute and chronic disease caused by blood flukes parasite (trematode worms) of the genus Schistosoma. Prevalent in tropical and subtropical areas.
