Zdar became a diverse town during the 20th century. The rich
cultural heritage of the Baroque period mixed up with the trends
brought in by newcomers who were employed in the modern
steelworks. Even during the years of socialism, the culture in
Zdar nad Sazavou did not significantly decline thanks to the arrival
of inteligent people from various parts of the country. Nowadays, the
town theatre hosts a wide range of renowned as well as alternative
performances and exhibitions. The House of Culture is one of the
most spacious community centres in the region and the place
hosting many outstanding events, fairs, conferences and famous
winter balls. A hidden gem is the Vysocina Cinema that has
recently established itself as one of the best and most visited
traditional cinemas in the Czech Republic. It underwent a large
renovation in 2017 and keeps improving its services.
And then there are Zdar's historical monuments. The most
significant is the pilgrimage church of St. John of Nepomuk on
Zelena hora inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in
1994. Together with the former Cistercian monastery and several
rare historical buildings in the center, the pilgrimage church is
unmistakenly connected to the history and presence of the town.
