Unique and remote setting of PEI made it slightly easier to control infectious diseases like COVID-19, but make it
challenging to address social determinants of health, risk factors for disease and to provide comprehensive care.
Health inequity continues to exist both between PEI residents and Canadians, and among the PEI populations.40
There is 5% lower life expectancy of Islanders at the age of 65 compared to the national average. PEI hospitals
also see 25% higher rates of heart attacks, and 20% more strokes compared to the national average, indicating
that chronic disease continues to play a major role in Islanders' health. 40
53% of Islanders who are unemployed report excellent or very good health, which is 14% lower than the people
who are employed.12
Interestingly, Islanders tend to report higher levels of perceived health relative to the rest of Canada.
Overall, the health of Islanders continues to be heavily influenced by the social determinants of health. The
Provincial Health Plan will focus on ways to address these gaps in order to provide better care on PEI.
