Average cost of public health regulatory
services per head of population
Rationale
Outcome 3
Health system
management
The Department of Health performs systemwide regulatory functions including
the regulation of food safety, vector control, wastewater management, tobacco
licensing, radiation safety and medicines and poisons in order to promote health
in the community; prevent disease before it occurs; and manage risks to human
health, whether natural or man-made.
This indicator measures the department's ability to regulate these functions in
an efficient manner and aligns with a key provision of the Public Health Act 2016
to consolidate and streamline regulatory tools to regulate any given risk to
public health.
Target
The target unit cost for 2022-23 is $7 per head of population to provide public
regulatory services.
Improved or maintained performance is demonstrated by a result below or
equal to the target.
