TAKEAWAY: HOUSING AFFORDABILITY Decrease in owner occupied housing and increase in rental occupied housing. Declining home ownership rates across income categories. Substantial increase in median rents over the past decade. While most North Dakotans can afford housing, lower income households are especially cost constrained. A substantial portion of renters are cost burdened, especially younger and senior householders which suggests we have an issues with rental affordability. While inventory numbers may suggest an adequate number of housing units at various levels of affordability, MLS data show that very few homes sold are affordable to low income households.
