Coral reef terraces Fossilised coral reefs, important relative sea-level indicators, only in (sub-)tropical climates. At tectonically uplifting/subsiding locations, they typically form 'staircases' with flat surfaces (terraces) bounded on either side by (paleo) sea-cliffs Complex interplay between reef growth, erosion and sedimentation, but to a first order, coral reef terraces mark relative sea-level highstands.
