Fiscal Policy
▸ One major area of debate in the country has been the maintenance of the fuel subsidy in
the country. It was the source of the 2012 Occupy Nigeria protests, which may have
played a role in the eventual defeat of incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan in the
2015 elections. Over a decade later, the current administration has similarly pledged to
end the costly and unsustainable subsidy programme.
