Nigeria's population estimates is almost evenly split
between the male and female members of society.
Yet, Nigeria ranked 128th out of 153 countries and
27th out of 53 countries in Africa, on the World
Bank's Global Gender Gap Index 2020 - which
implies that the country still has a way to go to
attaining gender equality and equal representation
for women.
The chart here shows the representation of male and
female ownership of SMEs in Nigeria in 2013 and
2017. From the chart, we can see that the male SME
owners outnumber their female counterparts at a
ratio of 3:1.
Also, the female-owned SMEs declined by 13%
between 2013 and 2017 (the male-owned SMEs
dropped too by 9%).
The drop in SMEs could be attributed to the
economic challenges brought on by the recession
and the consequent slow economic recovery.
