Mexico's Silver Belt Runs Through Guanajuato Today, Mexico is the world's leading producer of silver with 21% of global production, followed by Peru (15%), China (12%) and Australia and Russia (each 6%). Mexico's "La Faja de Plata” (The Silver Belt) runs 1,000 km from NW of Mexico City to Chihuahua and is the most prolific mining district in the world, with a historical production of more than 10,000 million ounces of silver (311,000 tons).
