Bangladesh's Development
The need for redesign
On the other hand, the 13.28 per cent of the government's COVID
response funds that were in the form of fiscal stimulus could not
find much success either.
The geographical distribution of the government's COVID-19 relief was
not appropriately linked with the country's socio-economic circumstances,
as regions with greater poverty rates got less rice and cash help than
districts with lower poverty rates.
□ Those who were tasked with managing relief activities have
been involved with stealing, storing and illegally selling rice,
soyabean oil, sugar and other essential food items that were
meant for distribution among the poor through safety net
programmes such as Vulnerable Group Feeding or Open Market
Sales.
Thus, it appears that the time has come to redesign the government's
economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
