Economic Highlights Growth ā˜ In 2016, almost 2.3 million Albertans were employed, international merchandise exports were $79 billion, and investment totaled $62 billion. Between 2006 and 2016, Alberta accounted for 22 per cent of Canada's population growth. In fact, Alberta's population increase of 24 per cent over that period was the largest increase of any province or state in North America. The Alberta economy contracted by 3.8 per cent in 2016, as a result of the recent oil and gas price declines which have led to sharply lower capital investment by oil and gas companies. Alberta's economy has started to grow again and all private sector forecasters are expecting Alberta's economy to be one of the top two provinces in economic growth in 2017. Alberta Government
