In a 2006 paper, (World Development, 34 (1):180-202) Jonathan Rigg reflected on the production and reproduction of poverty in the Rural South. He identified two kinds of poverty: "Old" poverty, perceived to stem largely from remoteness, dependence on traditional technology and lack of market access; "New" poverty, brought about as a result of the development process and the direct engagement of people with the market. To what extent are these ideas relevant to Kalimantan's experience during the Global Crisis?
