The $32.2 billion in direct economic activity (or
economic output) from the agribusiness cluster
(including all labor and non-labor expenditures)
leads to indirect effects totaling approximately $12.8
billion in economic output and 69,549 jobs. These
estimates reflect the increased demand for goods
and services of local suppliers resulting from in-state
expenditures on the part of agribusiness firms. The
direct economic activity also leads to induced effects
totaling another $6.8 billion in economic output
and 44,280 jobs. This is a reflection of economic
activity in South Carolina generated across all
industries that is the result of increased household
spending. The combination of the direct, indirect,
and induced effects leads to a total economic impact
of approximately $51.8 billion, which is associated
with 259,215 jobs across South Carolina. This makes
agribusiness one of the largest industry groups in
South Carolina. Tables 5 and 6 summarize all
impact estimates associated with each component.
