Who We Are
We create opportunities for people to buy, refinance, or
rent a home.
Fannie Mae sits at the very heart of the U.S.
housing industry.
We purchase eligible mortgages from lenders and
bundle them into mortgage-backed securities that we
guarantee and sell to investors. Lenders use their
replenished cash to originate new mortgages, and we
use ours to start the process again. This continuous
flow of money promotes a healthy housing market.
We estimate that, as of
December 31, 2022,
approximately 1 in 4 single-
family homes in the U.S.
with mortgages were
financed by Fannie Mae.
