Independent Review of

Bangladesh's Development
Profitability of Banks
During the Pandemic
PCBs experienced a decline in profitability, as their return on asset (ROA)
fell from 0.80% in 2019 to 0.70% in 2021, and their return on equity (ROE) fell
from 11.2% in 2019 to 10.1% in 2021.
DFIs dug themselves into a deeper hole after the pandemic, as their return on
asset and return on equity plummeted in 2020.
FCBs saw their profitability fall in 2021, as both their ROA and ROE fell sharply.
However, SCBs actually managed to improve their profitability in 2021.
