THE VIRGINIA AGING NETWORK VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT FOR AGING AND REHABILITATIVE SERVICES (DARS) The Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS), in col- laboration with community partners, provides and advocates for resources and services to improve the employment, quality of life, security, and inde- pendence of older Virginians, Virginians with disabilities, and their families. DARS is committed to guiding the Commonwealth in preparing for an aging population. DARS, as Virginia's State Unit on Aging (SUA) ensures older adults are able to live and thrive in the community of their choice by administering programs and services funded by the Older Americans Act (OAA), federal grants, and state general funding for services. The SUA is responsible for providing fund- ing to and overseeing 25 local Area Agencies on Aging (AAAS) that, in turn, provide funding to local service providers to deliver services to adults age 60 and older and their caregivers. DARS' monitoring of AAAs focuses on three compliance themes: AAA and Other Contractor Administration, Program Oper- ations, Governance and Fiscal Operations. In addition, the DARS hosts the State Long-Term Care (LTC) Ombudsman Pro- gram and is involved in a variety of collaborative initiatives aimed at helping older adults to remain in their home and community as long as they choose. DARS oversees the Adult Services (AS) and Adult Protective Services (APS) delivery system in the Commonwealth. DARS is also the designated state agency authorized to carry out the Rehabil- itation Act of 1973, as amended under the Workforce Innovation and Oppor- tunity Act of 2014. This includes receiving and administering federal funds to provide vocational rehabilitation (VR) and supported employment services to individuals with disabilities, the provision of state independent living ser- vices, and developing and supporting a statewide network of centers for in- dependent living (CILs).
