The history of Côte d'Ivoire The country became an independent nation from France on August 7th 1960. By the year 1980 it became the leading producer of cocoa, showing economic stability. The government instability began on September 2002 when the first civil war came up and divided the northern side against the southern side of the country. The second civil war broke out in 2010 but today the country remains calm and peaceful. These conflicts have put the country far into debt. REPUBLIQUE DE COTE D'IVOIRE
