STATU
7.8 GW of on-grid renewables, small
hydro and geothermal grow faster
Total renewables installed capacity in 2018 was 9.4 GW, 83% was on
grid. Around 66% of the on-grid renewable power plants in 2018 were
large hydro power. Geothermal, small hydro, and bioenergy
contributed 25%, 5%, and 3% respectively, while solar and wind each
contributed less than 1% of total capacity.
• According to the National Energy Plan (RUEN), renewables should
comprise 33% of total power plant capacity by 2025 (around 45.2 GW).
However, the 2018-2027 RUPTL only plans 14.3 GW of renewables
plants out of 51.8 GW of new plants planned until 2025, much lower
than RUEN target.
In term of generation, the share of renewables has been locked
between 11-13% since 2007 with no sign of improvement. The 2018
RUPTL projects a 23% renewables share in electricity generation in
2025, increasing from 14% in 2024.
