Eastern Long-beaked Echidna (Zaglossus bartoni)
Lives in the central mountains of New Guinea, and is
the largest egg-laying mammal in the world.
Highly susceptible to human predation. Trained
hunting dogs can detect and follow them to their
daytime retreats, even in densely forested habitat.
Forest wildfires at higher elevations during
prolonged drought threaten their upper montane
forest habitat, a threat amplified if climate change
increases the frequency or severity of fires.
