The town-island of Sviyazhsk is a historical and cultural pearl of the Republic of Tatarstan. An ancient fortress,
built in the distant Middle Ages during the reign of Ivan the Terrible, served as a military outpost in the Volga
region and a place of rest and preparation of military units for the campaign against the impregnable fortress
of Kazan.
Town-island Sviyazhsk is famous for its history, the spirit of Orthodox culture, and the beauty of the natural and
urban landscape. On the island, you can visit unique monasteries: Uspensko-Bogoroditsky and lonno-
Predtechensky with the oldest church of all Tatarstan.
