■ Northeast Region
Northeast region extends over an area of 1.55 million km² and represents about 18%
of the national territory. About 1.1 million km² (71.3%) of the region's territory is in
the Polígono das Secas ("dry region"), distributed in 1,348 municipalities in 8 UFs
(AL, BA, CE, PB, PE, PI, RN, SE).
The region holds 20% of GDP in accommodation and food, due to the importance of
tourism. In addition, it has the second largest GDP in electricity, gas and sanitation.
The Northeast is a region with high indices of poverty and the lowest GDP per capita
in the country. The unemployment rate is above the national average. Not
surprisingly, it concentrates the largest number of beneficiaries of social assistance
programs.
