Modernising Agreements and Transition to Renewables
Establishing a process to redefine and improve
cultural heritage management standards
Specific
actions
We are increasing both the capabilities and resources of the internal
Cultural Heritage teams to increase understanding and delivery of
cultural heritage performance.
Rio Tinto Iron Ore has almost doubled the size of its cultural heritage team to more
than 60 people.
We are progressing the Integrated Heritage Management Process (IHMP) to ensure
we do not impact sites of exceptional cultural significance within our existing mine
plans. To date, we have:
-
Reviewed 2205 heritage sites
- Reviewed all sites for 2021 and 95% for 2022
-
Removed approx. 54 million tonnes of Iron Ore from our reserves as a precautionary measure
Set up protective buffer zones for all sites of high cultural significance
