It has also been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The state of Quintana Roo has a plan for the conservation and sustainable use of its natural capital. The goal is to protect natural areas, animal welfare and biodiversity, to safeguard and encourage the sustainable use of natural resources. The strategy was created as part of the Mérida Declaration. Chiapas also developed a strategy for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity based on the signing of the Merida Declaration, for the purpose of protecting biodiversity in the State.
