• A few oil palm smallholders had been able to retain enough of their land to practise mixed farming. On Malaysian-owned estate PT SIA in Parindu (W. Kal), many farmers had managed to avoid providing the company with the required 7.5ha per family. On other plantations the company's 'core' took up 80% of the land, leaving only 20% for smallholders.
