DEMOGRAPHICS RURAL: According to Lombard (2013), “During the last decade, 82 of Virginia's 95 counties aged faster than Vir- ginia as a whole. The result is that, except for counties with major universities, every rural county in Vir- ginia is now older than Virginia's median age of 37.5, and most rural counties are considerably older." Older Virginians living in rural locations benefit from a lower cost of living compared to urban locations.7 However, Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs), such as the ability to acquire needed home re- sources, go grocery shopping, and connect with others, may become more difficult in a rural setting. Ac- cess to internet to identify resources is not always available, and lack of medical providers may also be an issue, creating potential health crises and social isolation. 2016 Percent of People age 65 + Living in Nonmetropolitan Are- as in Virginia Percent (%) 18.2 Source: AARP Data Explorer, 2016, Virginia Demographics, Percent of People Age 65+ Living in Non- metropolitan Areas8 COMMON HEALTH CONDITIONS: Arthritis Asthma Cancer Chronic Kidney Disease COPD Depression Percent (%) 55 8 29 5 12 13 24 11 Diabetes Heart Disease Source: AARP Data Explorer, Virginia Demographic11s, Prevalence of Diagnosed Health Conditions by State, Age, and Race/Ethnicity (2016)9 HOUSEHOLDS: The table below demonstrates the numbers of older adults in Virginia who are currently living alone; those who live alone are at greater risk of social isolation. There are a variety of factors that contribute to social isolation. Having limited contact with others can intensify feelings of loneliness and isolation. Living alone is one indicator in addition to a decreasing number of social networks and feelings of loneliness. 10 2017 Percent (%) All Virginia 60 + Households Living alone Total 1,063,201 387,075 37.5 Source: U.S. Census Bureau, 2017 American Community Survey 1-Year Estimates 7Lombard, H.
