HOW GESTATION CRATES ARE CURRENTLY STILL USED IN
MCDONALD'S' SUPPLY CHAIN
McDonald's allows the use of gestation crates up until a sow is confirmed to be pregnant, which can take up to six
weeks of its pregnancy and is a complete shift from its stated commitment in 2012, which had a goal of eliminating

The typical breeding cycle of sows that McDonald's uses in their supply chain is around 20 weeks. Six weeks are spent in
Gestation crates. They then move to Group Housing for 10 weeks and once they are going to give birth (16 weeks after being
inseminated) they are moved into Farrowing Crates where they nurse their piglets for about four weeks. This occurs over and
over again (multiple pregnancies per year) for about 4 years when the industry suggests sows peak production. The sows are
then sent to slaughter.
