Winter Olympic Games
2014
In 2014 the 22nd Winter Olym-
pic Games and the 11th Winter
Paralympic Games took place
in Sochi, Krasnodar Region. The
Olympics in Sochi became one
of the most largescale and big-
gest Russian projects of the last
20 years. Not only two clusters
of sports venues were construct-
ed practically from scratch (the
Olympic Park and the mountain
cluster in Krasnaya Polyana),
but also the infrastructure of a
huge area, including all the South
of the Krasnodar Region, was
modernized. New electric pow-
er plants and electrical grids, an
underwater gas pipeline, waste
treatment facilities, a port and
an airport were constructed, as
well as unique motor- and rail-
ways with numerous bridges
and tunnels, multiple hotels and
residential houses. Due to new
SOCHI 2014
modern infrastructure facilities, HOT. COOL. YOURS. TOW
Sochi turned into an interna-
tional sports centre and an all-
year-round world-class resort.
The Olympics gave a significant
boost to the development of
sports and healthy lifestyle in
Russia and served as a strong
factor of economic growth and
creation of new workplaces (up
to 600,000 workplaces were
created). The total expenditures
of the government and private
investors provided for holding
the Olympics amounted to 214
bln rubles (99 bln rubles from the
State Budget), and expenditures
for modernization of infrastruc-
ture in Sochi and the Krasnodar
Region exceeded the sum of 1.5
tin rubles. Formula 1 in Sochi.
Since 2014 Sochi (Krasnodar Re-
gion) has annually hosted a stage
of the world-class racing cham-
pionship.
