Social Portrait, Religion K uban is a multinational re- gion where representatives of more than 120 ethnic groups reside. ā€• A prevailing nation is the Rus- sians who consider themselves a special sub-ethnos Kuban Cos- sacks who speak Russian with elements of the Ukrainian lan- guage. The Armenians (the area of Armavir) and the Greeks also live compactly in the Krasnodar Region. Also, a significant num- ber of Ukrainians reside in the territory. 14 OCC Event Passport Krasnodar Region The Krasnodar Region is one of the most densely-populated regions of the country; it holds the third place by the population - 5,121,000 people or 3.4% of the Russian population. Religion epresentatives of 32 confes- sions reside on the territory of Kuban: 86% of them are Orthodox Christians, 6% are pa- rishioners of the Armenian Apos- tolic Church, 3% are Muslims, 5% are representatives of other reli- gions. In total, more than 700 organi- zations that represent adepts of 28 religious trends are regis- tered in the Krasnodar Region. The Russian Orthodox Church is the largest in number ā€“ both by _ a number of followers and its in- fluence on the social and political situation in the territory. More than 300 congregations of the Yekaterinodar-Kuban Diocese of the Moscow Patriarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church are registered in the Krasnodar Re- gion. More than 40 Orthodox church- es of Kuban has a status of newly discovered historical and cultural sites of the Krasnodar Region, so they are protected by the gov- ernment. Two out of 14 function- al Orthodox cathedrals of the territorial centre has a status of architectural landmarks. 15
