Beginning on 23 July 1983, there was an intermittent insurgency against the government by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), which fought to create an independent Tamil state called Tamil Eelam in the north and the east of the island. After a 26 year military campaign, the Sri Lankan military defeated the Tamil Tigers in May 2009, bringing the civil war to an end. The Sri Lanka Police & STF are the other lead organizations to respond in case of theft or attempted theft of radioactive material by monitoring 24 X 7. As the lead organization, the Council should immediately coordinate with the Sri Lanka Police & STF for immediate response to the incident involving the theft or attempted theft of radioactive material as per the actions in above Response Code.#11SLAERC/C-01 ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES OF STF According to "National Radiological Theft Response Code" CONFIDENTIAL SLAERC CODE NATIONAL RADIOLOGICAL THEFT RESPONSE CODE SRI LANKA Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council June 2019 1. Once STF is notified, immediate actions should be taken to respond to the incident under the technical advice of the Council. 2. The STF involved in the situation should communicate with the Council and the Police and necessary advices should be obtained from the Council until the situation is totally controlled. 3.
