Year of Entry and Citizenship The longer foreign-born residents are present in the country, the more likely they are to become naturalized citizens. In Maryland, 79% of immigrants who entered the country before 1990 are naturalized citizens, compared to only 14% of immigrants who entered the county since 2000. Nationwide, 72% of immigrants who entered the country before 1990 are naturalized citizens, compared to only 14% of immigrants who entered the country since 2000.
