Conventional Power Generation • Power station, generating station, power plant, powerhouse or generating plants all involve the conversion of thermal energy (fuel) into mechanical energy (prime mover) into electrical energy (generator). Classified by fuel: • Fossil Fuel - coal and natural gas. ⚫ Nuclear • Classified by Prime Mover: • Steam turbine • Gas turbine 2nd Law of Thermodynamics - Waste heat must be rejected and is > or = to electrical energy produced ⚫ typically rejected to atmosphere (cooling tower) or body of water (lake or river).
